Your Book Jacket

No matter how great a book is, if it is not packaged properly, then it may stay on the shelves and not be sold.  Marketing books has become a business of huge proportions.  Many companies that deal with publishing usually have staff members who work specifically on designing books.  These staff members range from cover artists, to copywriters and graphic designers.

Usually, a copywriter fashions the wording that will be on the jacket of the book or on the cover itself if there is no jacket. These copywriters may be fulltime staff working with the publishers, or may be contract copywriters or copywriters who are freelancers.  It is their duty to create the information that will help to sell your book.

If not the copywriter however, then you find an editorial assistant may be the one who will have to take on the task of creating the jacket of your book on top of all they already have to do.  This is not the most favourite task for editorial assistants who may not even have the requisite skills to be able to persuade the reading public to pick up your book from the shelf and buy it.  In some cases,  it may be prudent for the writer themselves to be able to write their own copy of their book jacket.  This may become necessary for a number of reasons as we will discuss below:

Firstly, you will have the opportunity to succinctly summarize your own text.  It also helps you to look again at the story and therefore the chance to do some additional editing of the manuscript in the interim.

Secondly, it helps you to ensure that you will be able to hold the attention of your target audience, or if you did not yet identified your target audience, to do so at that juncture.

Thirdly, if you will be distributing enquiry letters to publishing houses with respect to getting your manuscript out there, then you would have had to try to sell the idea of your own book right?

Lastly, when your preferred publisher has decided to work with you on your book, you will be able to see to it that the book jacket is done in such a way that it will be extremely attractive to book buyers.

The Choice with Your Book Jacket

Albeit you can opt to do it yourself with respect to your book jacket, always be mindful of the fact that you do have the choice of hiring an expert in the field to do it for you.
