Living Room Lighting Tips to Live By & Light By

The living room is a hotspot of the home, and throughout the day the level and type of activity will change frequently. For this reason, we expect a lot from our living room lighting. The question is do we have sufficient lighting fixtures to accommodate these high demands? Try out these living room lighting tips for gaining the optimum lighting situation in your home.

Living room lighting requires illumination on many levels. Here are the various layers you are going to want to aim for:

Entertaining- Nobody wants to sit in a dark room during a dinner party. Food is more appealing, conversation more flowing and general ambiance more pleasant in a well-lit room. For this type of situation, use a large overhead fixture as well as wall sconces to bathe the room with plenty of light.

Daytime Activity Center- Whether it is your older kids doing homework, your younger ones playing games or a quick chat with the neighbor, the constant motion of this area requires lots of light. As with entertaining, you want plenty of light sources. The difference here is that, because it is daytime, you should be taking advantage of your natural light resources. Keep window shades open, tie curtains back and open the skylight if you have one. Why spend money on electricity when you have a natural alternative? On gloomy days, you will have to resort to the “Entertaining” living room lighting tips, but when you can, let the sun shine in!

Relaxing- With the kids in bed, and the house clean, you can finally sit down to relax. The last thing you want is a bunch of bright lights glaring down at you. When it’s time to unwind for the night, switch over to living room lamps. This living room lighting option will really set the tone for down time. You can have several living room lamps situated at different levels and areas within the room. Keep one close to the armchair or couch you frequently cuddle up to, another near the bookcase, and possibly a third highlighting the coffee table. Romantic- For the rare occasions when you and your special someone get to be alone, subdued lighting is a simple and saintly gift. Living room lamps are also wonderful ambiance setters for a romantic evening, but here is where that dimmer switch will really come in handy.

Watching Movies, Television, & Using the Computer- These tasks require a unique form of lighting. You need something that will give off ample light to avoid eye strain, since you’ll be using your eyes excessively, but light that is not too bright as to cause glare or discoloration of the images you are trying to view. Mini track lighting fixtures and other low-level lighting will help to avoid glare. These will also give enough light so that the screen and contents can be seen well. The best-case scenario is installing the adjustable or track lighting fixtures in such a way so that the light can come from behind the screen you are focusing on.

Art Display- Finally, the living room is a center for activity, and therefore usually houses some of your most decorative items. Highlight these attractive pieces with the proper living room lighting options. Use up-lighting set on or near the floor to create a dramatic wash against the wall from below. Mini track lighting fixtures can highlight wall art, sculptures on a pedestal or wall alcove, and pieces within a china cabinet. Small recessed lighting or thin halogen bar lights can do the same with less flexibility, though.
